Johnston, SC – Dr. Micah Drew, a licensed community pharmacist and member of the Strom Thurmond High School Class of 2015, won the special Edgefield County School District Board of Education (ECBOE) election (held 7/18) to fill the Zone 6 (Merriwether) seat held previously by beloved board member, Erik Drylie, who passed away in April.
She was sworn in by Edgefield County School District (ECSD) Superintendent, Dr. Kevin O’Gorman, on Tuesday evening, August 8, 2023, during the school board’s regular August meeting.
Her tremendous passion for education began in the Edgefield County School District at W.E. Parker Elementary School and continued at Johnston-Edgefield-Trenton (J-E-T) Middle School and Strom Thurmond High School (STHS). That passion has only grown over time. With the opportunity to serve as a school board member, she wants to give back.
“As I’ve gotten older, I’ve had a greater appreciation for the education I received growing up in Edgefield County and I wanted to stay in Edgefield and give back to the community,” stated Drew.
Her goal as a new school board member is simple, but meaningful: “I want to look out for the best interests of our students and help provide them with the best education possible alongside other opportunities so they can be prepared for the next step in their lives, whatever that next step may be.”
Drew’s educational background includes a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, both from the University of South Carolina. She has worked in the pharmacy industry since 2017.
At Strom Thurmond High School, Drew was the Class of 2015 Valedictorian, she also served as drum major for the Rebel Regiment marching band, played soccer, and worked at The Triangle restaurant in Johnston.
Her experience at STHS provided everything needed for success in life and business.
"I was able to strengthen my leadership skills through my position as drum major in the marching band. Also, I felt that a good work ethic was instilled in us by our teachers, who really pushed us to give our best,” commented Drew. “We were taught how to work hard and succeed in everything we did. We had a lot of support from our teachers, and we benefited from living in a small town because you’re not just a number. It motivated us to want to be even better.”
“I’m super excited to meet everyone and get started,” she added.
Drew’s term will run through November of 2026.
