Johnston, SC – During the weeks leading up to the start of the 2023-24 varsity basketball season, Strom Thurmond High School (STHS) Lady Rebels’ point guard Katlyn Chinn was recognized by many organizations as one of the top players in all of Class AA hoops.

 

Katlyn has lived up to those lofty expectations for the Lady Rebels (15-10) who are currently in second place in the Region 3-AA standings, as she is averaging 16 points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals per game.

 

In a home victory this season over Fox Creek, Katlyn’s 18 points helped her reach the 1,000th point of her Lady Rebels’ career, setting her apart as one of the best players in STHS history.

 

“It meant everything to me,” stated Katlyn. “I was counting down every point in my head, and I was determined to get it.”

 

The milestone basket came on a drive to the hoop and a quick pull-up jump shot. For Katlyn, there was never a doubt.

 

“I knew it was going in when it left my hand,” she commented. “It shows all the younger kids that even in a small town, if you work hard, you can accomplish something so big.”

 

Strom Thurmond High School varsity girls’ basketball coach, Dr. Alan Gray, says his senior star has been the epitome of a terrific teammate and a model for other players to follow.

 

“Scoring 1,000 points is not a small feat, and it’s something you have to work for,” stated Dr. Gray. “Katlyn is well deserved of those one thousand points because she works very hard at her craft. We’re very happy for her. It couldn’t happen to a nicer person.”

 

Katlyn is the daughter of Ulysses and Gwendolyn Chinn, of Johnston.

 

The Lady Rebels travel to Aiken County tomorrow (2/6) to face the Silver Bluff High School Lady Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m. in a battle of the top two teams in the Region 3-AA standings.
