Johnston, SC – The Strom Thurmond High School Rebels and Lady Rebels varsity basketball teams started the home portion of the 2023-2024 hoops season in style with non-region victories over Midland Valley High School.

The Rebels defeated the Mustangs by a final score of 51-24 and head coach Owen Jacobs was pleased with his team’s balanced effort on the floor.

“Midland Valley really had our number the last few times we’ve played them and tonight we were able to flip the script, so I was proud of the guys for that and for their effort,” stated Coach Jacobs. “Now we just need to work on some different things, offensively. ”

The Rebels (3-1) were led in the game by senior Quan Edmond with a team-high 20 points, alongside sophomore AJ Walker who had nine points in the ballgame.

Meanwhile, the Lady Rebels were able to hold off the Lady Mustangs in the fourth quarter and win a 36-31 final.

Senior point guard, Katlyn Chinn, who was recognized as a pre-season statewide Top 5 senior in Class AA, led the Lady rebels in the game with a team-high 22 points. Junior guard Sunasia Saxon added nine points, while freshman guard Lawsyn Lowe had five points.
