Mustangs Celebrate Elise Kirk as 2023-24 MMS Distinguished Teacher of Literacy

Merriwether Elementary School recently announced teacher Elise Kirk as the school's Distinguished Teacher of Literacy for the 2023-24 school year as part of its "Spirit Week" festivities.

The school celebrated the announcement with a surprise potluck lunch, a congratulatory card from colleagues and notes from students.

Mrs. Kirk says it's important to make subjects and lessons fun and engaging for students by giving them a voice.

"The students' voice is important in making it fun for them," she stated. "It is not all about me making the decisions or reading. I want to hear them and their thoughts. We have great discussions that allow me a chance to really get to know them."

Mrs. Kirk cannot stress enough how important it is for students to develop their literacy skills.

"Literacy skills are in everything because we need them in all of our classes, in our day to day communication and life," she commented. "Literacy skills empower and build a foundation, allowing students to seek and gain information and understanding of life that is happening all around them."

Congratulations Mrs. Kirk!
